Old School (Unrated Edition) [Blu-ray]

Old School (Unrated Edition) [Blu-ray]

Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 12/16/2008 Run time: 92 minutes Rating: UrWhen three thirtysomething friends with woman troubles (Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn) decide to form a fraternity, it’s supposedly to save Wilson from losing his house, which the nearby college is trying to claim for academic purposes. But really, Ferrell and Vaughn are desperate to return to the reckless, feckless days of beer bongs and hot chicks, and they drag Wilson along with them as they throw themselves into gathering frat pledges of all ages. Old School could have been just another string of bad jokes hanging on a flimsy plot, but the script and the cast have a jovial energy and just enough grounding in reality–at least, up until the obligatory beat-the-system ending, but by that point you’ll forgive the excesses of this silly, cheerful, and frequently funny movie. Featuring Jeremy Piven and Juliette Lewis, with cameos by Snoop Dog, Andy Dick, and others. –Bret Fetzer

Omnisexual College Hijinks

It is really hard to produce a really good comedy and “Old School” comes really close to being one of the best. However, director Todd Phillips went a step too far with this outing. The movie is very funny and the stars, Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn pull out all the stops. They are guys in their thirties who decide that they should start a fraternity so they can experience what they missed when they were in college. The humor is raunchy and sometimes outrageous and it will keep you laughing. It is unapologetic with cheap laughs, however. Every cliché you have ever seen before seems to have found its way into this movie. There are wild frat parties, wrestling girls covered in KY, and antics galore.

At least the movie makes no pretense of being more than it is yet it is not insipid–it is just fun. It is not a bad movie but neither is it a good movie. Luke Wilson is perfect as Mitch who is steady and reserved who instigated the whole idea. As his friend Beanie is Vince Vaughn who has perfect comic timing and who raises the idea that since Mitch has now left his cheating girlfriend, they should celebrate his new freedom. They are

soon joined by every thirty something who feels

he needs to recapture his college days when they were not in the “in crowd”. Will Ferrell as Frank the Tank owns his role as the lovable loser and the sad sack. He has the best lines. Andy Dick in a cameo performance as a cross dressing gay male is hysterical.

If you like to laugh and really do not care how silly things can get, this is the movie for you. I, personally, prefer drama.

5 Stars “I’M HERE FOR THE GANGBANG.”
This looked like the last movie I would ever get, not being particularly into farces and screwball comedy. But

if Vince Vaughn (”Swingers”, “Made”) is in it, then I probably will give it a look. “Old School” fulfilled Vaughn’s comic promise, but it is ensemble and great.

It starts out with just the right touch when Luke Wilson returns home and finds sexy girlfriend Juliette Lewis expecting not him but her “Internet friends,” who are coming over “for the gangbang.” Makes you want to do a Google search for “single girls looking for group sex.”

This is an up-dated “Animal House”, maybe better. Luke’s post-Juliette recovery includes moving into a house next to the college, and when it looks like he cannot stay due to school regulations, they form a fraternity. Luke is a lawyer and his legal skills keep them above the dean’s attempts to disband them as part of a childhood revenge.

Vince gives us great lines like, “What do you think, instead of spending time with my wife I’d rather hang out with 19-year old girls?”

USC grad Will Ferrell, who once tried out for the Trojans as a punter, may carry this film through sheer craziness. There is little message, just laughs. It has some mature themes, but despite Juliette’s sexual wanderings is basically tame.

In the end, Juliette is still into swinging, when she invites Will to her next sexfest.

5 Stars Great service!
The DVD arrived amazingly fast, in excellent condition because it was packaged very well, and was exactly as advertised. Easy, accurate transaction, great seller!

5 Stars Old School Just Plain Funny
This gets funnier every time I watch it. One of the best comedies ever. Frank the Tank is Will Farrell’s best character.
